Southern California coiled Mission winnowing or shifting Tray, ca. 1800s. Made with traditional grasses of the area with a grass foundation. This is an old utilitarian basket of southern California.
The process of winnowing was a common practice in southern California. The process consisted of vigorously shaking or whirling seeds in the basket to separate seeds from their chaff or outer coverings. Because of the depth was probably used for acorns.
Excellent condition, with traditional seven pedal design with center design.
Southern California Mission tray. Great condition, some missing coils around the rim, but a beautiful old basket with a great design.
Measures 14 1/2" in diameter, 4" deep.
