Yurok/Hupa cooking basket, ca. 1890s
Yurok/Hupa cooking bowl basket, ca. 1890s. Cooking baskets from this area are traditionally twined of pine root with two horizontal bands of bear grass overlay on the upper portion of the basket .
The weave is very tight, because this was used for their mush meals, so it is watertight. Beautiful patterns. Condition is excellent for its age, except for some wear along the rim. Bottom shows signs of cooking, it is darker.
Yurok/Hupa people have been excelling at basketry since the 17th century.
