Zuni alligator or crocodile fetish, Picasso marble, made in 1990s
Zuni alligator fetish made in the 1990's , made of Picasso marble. It is 1.5" tall, 4.5" long, and 7/8" wide. This fetish was handmade in 1997, and was purchased as part of an estate collection.
Alligators are not used in Zuni religious traditions, but the artists like to carve all different animals as a challenge, and as an example of the carvers' ingenuity, skill, and adaptability. To the Zuni, lizards represent agility, speed, and resilience to survive.
