Alligator or crocodile fetish by Fabian Tsethlikai, pipestone
Native American Zuni fetish carving of an alligator, made of pipestone with inlay turquoise eyes. It is 3" long, 1/2" tall, and 3/4" wide at the widest part. This fetish was handmade by Zuni artist Fabian Tsethlikai, and is signed on the bottom.
Alligators are not used in Zuni religious traditions, but the artists like to carve all different animals as a challenge, and as an example of the carvers' ingenuity, skill, and adaptability. To the Zuni, lizards represent agility, speed, and resilience to survive.
