Zuni fetish of a Hippopotamus by Zuni artist Bryston Bowannie. Native American Made. Made of brown/tan marble with inlay turquoise eyes. The style of carving is very typical of the artist. Signed on the bottom.
Hippos like this are not native to New Mexico, so they were not a traditional fetish carving animal, but exotic animals like this are often carved to showcase the Zuni carvers' ingenuity and skill.
