Black bear Zuni fetish with heart line, ca. 1970s, hand-carved by Zuni artist Neil Natewa. The bear is made of black jet with inlay turquoise bead eyes and a red coral heart line. The thick cut and broken red heart line is distinctive to this artist. Since this is an old fetish it is not signed, but it is his style.
The bear is one of the most popular fetishes, it symbolizes strength, power, courage, adaptability, and health. Protector from the west.
