Sea turtle family and dragonfly fetish by Daisy Leonard Natewa, multi stone
Zuni sea turtle family fetish with dragonfly, made from different stones by Zuni artist Daisy Leonard Natewa. The mother turtle is made from white/pink marble, the baby is made from a composite stone of hand carved Kingman turquoise, spiny oyster and pyrite. The dragonfly is carved from pink clam shell. All have inlay silver eyes. They are tied together with a medicine bundle made of turquoise beads, pin shell and heishe shell. Signed on the bottom.
Turtles represent longevity, are a rain-bringing fetish, and serve as links to the Zuni ancestors. Dragonflies are symbols of rain, which is very important to the Zuni, as it is the source of all life on earth.
The medicine bundle is an offering to the animal's spirit that amplifies the power of the fetish.
