Signed Book: Traditional Hopi Kachinas
Hardcover - excellent condition, still has dust jacket
By Jonathan S. Day
In a readable, breezy style, Day, a second-generation trader to the Hopi, discusses the evolution of carving styles and gives guidelines about buying them. He then explores a new trend in carving kachinas through profiles of 19 current carvers who have gone back to the traditional styles - compact, symbolic, and totemic - of carving, painting, and ornamenting their dolls. The focus here is on the artists, their lives, and their work, with quotes from each.
Signed on the inside by the author, who wrote "By Spike" next to a picture of a kachina.
This is an out of print book, hard to find. Online it sells for $146 - $236.
